Lilly Licenses Xencor's ImmunoFilter(TM) Technology; Proprietary Tool to Assess Potential Protein Immunogenicity for more than 95% of U.S. Population

Xencor, Inc., a biotherapeutics company developing protein and antibody therapeutics, today announced that it has granted Eli Lilly and Company a non-exclusive license to use Xencor's ImmunoFilter technology to evaluate the potential immunogenicity of its therapeutic proteins. ImmunoFilter is a new predictive tool designed to enable Xencor and its partners to identify risk of future immunogenicity in antibody and other protein therapeutic candidates. Immunogenicity may reduce the therapeutic efficacy of a protein drug and may trigger potentially severe adverse events.

Xencor's ImmunoFilter tools were developed based on a proprietary immunochemical data set of peptide agretope binding to class II major histocompatibility complex ("MHC") proteins, a key determinant of recognition of antigens by the immune system. Capable of assessing potential immunogenicity for more than 95% of the U.S. population and based on empirical binding data, ImmunoFilter technology is the first predictive method to use direct experimental measurements to catalog the breadth of MHC-peptide interactions.

Pioneer in solid-fuel rock technology dies

LOS ANGELES -- Col. Edward N. Hall, who as director of the Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missile program helped develop the country's solid-fuel rocket technology, putting the U.S. decades ahead of other superpowers, has died. He was 91.
Hall died Sunday at Torrance Memorial Medical Center, said his daughter, Sheila Hall. The cause of death was not immediately known.

Hall's immense knowledge of rocket propellants helped the Air Force create its first solid-fuel ICBM in the late 1950s. The switch from liquid fuel to solid made missiles smaller, easier to deploy and less expensive.
The Minuteman became the country's premier missile defense system. It took countries such as the former Soviet Union and China decades to create similar programs.
"It's on a short list of military marvels of the 20th century ... right up there with the Manhattan Project," John Pike, director of the military information Web site, globalsecurity.org, said of the accomplishments of Hall and those he worked with.
Hall was born in New York City in 1914 and received a bachelor's degree in engineering from City College of New York in 1935. He later earned a master's in aeronautical engineering from California Institute of Technology.

After enlisting in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he was deployed to England where he repaired U.S. aircraft. Near the war's end he was assigned to acquire intelligence on Germany's rocket propulsion equipment and studied parts recovered from V-2 rockets.
After the war, Hall was assigned to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, where he worked on liquid-fueled rocket engines. While there, he built a rocket that had a thrust of 135,000 pounds - more than double the power exerted by the German V-2.
Hall left the Air Force in 1959 and spent 14 years as an engineer at United Aircraft Corp. In retirement, he was a consultant for engineering and aerospace companies.

Sony, Toshiba, IBM renew technology alliance

Sony, Toshiba and IBM today announced that they have renewed their joint technology development alliance with a new five-year agreement. As part of the alliance, the three companies will work together on semiconductor research and development, specifically on process technologies at 32 nanometres (nm) and smaller. No financial details regarding the companies' investments under the new agreement have been disclosed. Over the past five years the companies have collaborated on the 'Cell' microprocessor design, as well as its underlying silicon-on-insulator (SoI) process technologies at 90 and 65 nm. Over the past five years, the alliance has proven successful, with the Cell microprocessor functioning as the heart of the upcoming Sony Playstation 3 gaming console. The joint development alliance has reportedly helped the companies bring semiconductor products to market more quickly. Each company brings different strengths – Toshiba's manufacturing resources, Sony's experience in consumer markets and IBM's material technology – which accelerate the process from testing to commercialisation. Research and development for the alliance will take place at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York, the Center for Semiconductor Research at Albany Nano Tech and at IBM's 300 millimeter manufacturing facility in East Fishkill.

Qualcomm to conduct FLO technology demonstration with Samsung and LGE

Qualcomm, a US developer and innovator of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and other wireless technologies, announced that the company will conduct a live over-the-air demonstration of FLO Technology with Samsung Electronics at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2006 this month in Las Vegas.

Qualcomm will also demonstrate FLO technology on 3G handsets with LG Electronics Mobile Comm at the same event. FLO Technology, a multicast innovation and key component of Qualcomm's Media FLO System, is an air-interface technology designed to increase capacity and coverage and reduce costs for multimedia content delivery to mobile handsets. Qualcomm claims that FLO also reduces the network cost of delivering multimedia content by decreasing the number of transmitters that need to be deployed. In addition, FLO Technology-based multimedia multicasting will complement wireless operators' CDMA2000 1X, 1xEV-DO and W-CDMA cellular network data and voice services, delivering content to the same cellular handsets used on these 3G networks.

Media FLO USA is a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm, offering interactive wireless multimedia services to consumers in cooperation with US wireless operators. Beyond its Media FLO capabilities, Samsung's handsets will feature a two-megapixel camera with flash, video (MPEG4/H.263/H.264/WMV) and audio (MP3/AAC/AAC+/WMA) support and a microSD external memory.

Microsoft Corp. on Wednesday confirmed that it took down the blog of outspoken Chinese journalist Zhao Jing, saying that it was complying with China's laws.

Blogger Rebecca MacKinnon, a former CNN Beijing bureau chief now a research fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School, first reported that Jing's blog was taken down New Years Eve by Microsoft's blog-hosting service MSN Spaces. The blog has been replaced with the message, "This space is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."
Zhao, aka Michael Anti, is among a number of Chinese bloggers that have grown in popularity in the Communist nation where the general media is government controlled.

China last year started tightening its control over Internet services, but has yet to launch a major crackdown on bloggers. Experts believe the government is still struggling with media control without stymieing the country's emerging Internet businesses. China is the second largest Internet market, and is growing quickly.

Microsoft said in a statement that the decision to unplug Zhao was inline with its practice of "ensuring that products and services comply with global and local laws, norms, and industry practices."

"Most countries have laws and practices that require companies providing online services to make the Internet safe for local users," the company said. "Occasionally, as in China, local laws and practices require consideration of unique elements.”

Microsoft is not the first U.S. tech company to help the Chinese government in controlling the media. Yahoo in September gave information about journalist Shi Tao's personal email account to Beijing, which later jailed him for 10 years on charges of divulging state secrets.

It's also not unusual for U.S. search engines, such as Google, Microsoft MSN, and Yahoo, to censor their Chinese-language search results at the request of the government.

Acacia Technologies Expands Patent Acquisition Team

DuPont Chief Science & Technology Officer Receives Award from Chemical Heritage Foundation

PHILADELPHIA, June 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- DuPont Senior Vice
President and Chief Science & Technology Officer Thomas M. Connelly, Jr. was
presented the 2005 "Award for Executive Excellence" as part of the Chemical
Heritage Foundation "Heritage Day 2005" ceremonies yesterday.
The award is given annually to an individual who has made an outstanding
contribution in the field of commercial development and marketing in the
chemical and allied industries. The Award for Executive Excellence is
sponsored by the Commercial Development and Marketing Association (CDMA).
Chairman of the CDMA Awards Committee Dr. Larry Drum said, "With extensive
experience at every level of technology innovation, in Europe, the Pacific
Rim, and the United States, Dr. Connelly has consistently demonstrated

During the ceremony, Connelly was recognized for being instrumental in
leading the company toward products based on renewable resources. Under his

This shift from the traditional petrochemical-based businesses is exemplified

of Cambridge in 1977, and subsequently joined DuPont as a research engineer in
the Elastomer Chemicals Department based in Wilmington, Del.

Bank to Spend Sh600m On Technology Upgrade

Equity Bank is to spend up to Sh600 million to upgrade its computer technology.
It has contracted three technology firms to provide solutions for its branch network, automated teller machine (ATM) rollouts and product diversification.

Infosys will provide the universal banking solution known as Finacle.
Hewlett Packard will offer data centre expertise and Oracle the database solutions.
To run the core banking software, Hewlett Packard will install what Equity calls a state-of-the-art data centre with enterprise systems capable of handling over 10,000 transactions a second.
This will include a comprehensive disaster recovery site focused on ensuring the integrity and availability of customer data.
"These installations will make us the first Kenyan Bank to install hard partition risk- based servers and blade server farms by embracing server consolidation and virtualisation principles," said Ken Mbwaya of Hewlett Packard East Africa. Oracle, for its part, will strengthen Equity's data security systems.
Infosys, a global software solutions and business consulting company, is listed on the technology-heavy stock market known in the US as Nasdaq, but based in Bangalore, India.
Providing details of the bank's technology project at the Serena Hotel yesterday, managing director James Mwangi said: "Our customers will enjoy, among other services, Internet banking, point-of-sale deposits, ATM services, true secure mobile banking, SMS alerts and greater customer- profiled products," said Mr Mwangi.

Macronix unveals 2-bit per cell NOR Flash technology

Macronix have developed a new technology which will allow a NOR Flash memory device to store twice the amount of data, and still keep the die within the dimensions of the product sizes we are used to. The 2-bit per cell approach employed makes use of a new nitride-based multiple bits per cell technology, which will help to keep costs down. Typically, silicon-based floating gate NOR Flash memory products can physically store only one bit of information in each cell. The firm's "NBit" technology, however, physically stores two bits of information in each cell: The nitride-based cell "traps" the charge on one side of the cell and the charge does not flow to the other side of the cell unlike floating gate cells. As a result, another charge can be stored physically on the other side of the cell providing two bits per cell. Programming of each bit is performed by hot electron injection, erase is performed by band to band tunneling, and read by the reverse read mechanism.

IBM expands open source hardware group

Power.org, a sui-disant open source organisation based around IBM's Power instruction set, has just expanded. It shows, said IBM, the health of the open source movement, this time in hardware not just software.
Eleven new members joined the 17-strong organisation which describes itself as "dedicated to accelerating collaborative innovation on the Power microprocessor technology". Among the innovations on show at the Barcelona conference where the new members were announced was a parallel processor architecture from small, 15-person start-up Rapport.
Rapport aims to harness large numbers of simple, parallel processors -- somewhat similar to the original 8088 PC chip, according to marketing VP Debby Hinds. Applications for such chips, dubbed Kilocore, include replacing large single or dual-core CPUs while generating much less heat because they run at a much lower clock speed. The kinds of tasks to which they might be put, said Hinds, include compute-intensive jobs for which massively parallel embedded processing is inherently suited, such as pattern recognition, VoIP and encryption.
Other companies present at the conference included Thales, which announced a new Power-based avionics system designed specifically for use in cutting-edge avionics development and military embedded applications.
Apple departure leaves dry eyes behindAmong the delegates Techworld spoke to, few seemed fazed by the departure, announced just 24 hours before, of one of the Power chip's most prominent - if not necessarily the most profitable - users: Apple. If anything, the attitude was that it made little difference, given that Apple's volumes are low, with just two percent of the PC market.
The stock market agreed, and IBM's shares barely shifted on the news. Big Blue makes chips for a range of other customers as well as its own servers. And with other customers such as Sony and Microsoft having selected IBM chips for the latest generation of Xbox, analysts do not expect too many tears to be shed when Apple finally folds its tent. Instead the tears, if any, look likely to be shed mainly by the Mac faithful who will end up funding Apple's third change of fundamental platform.
